Inspection of the village (roads, homes, ambulatory, school)

Relations with the “key-persons” which are to be individuated within the village (teachers, priests, village chief, nurse, midwife, native doctors.)
POPULATION
OBJECTIVE:
to know the population that will be the target of the project: how many persons, their age distribution, their learning ability.
METHOD:
a questionnaire to administrate to the sanitary authorities and to the key-persons
HYGIENIC-SANITARY PROBLEMS AND NEEDS
OBJECTIVE:
to know the needs of the target population, the major pathologies, the knowledge level, in what concerns the hygiene, health, nutrition, water sanity, etc…
METHOD:
inspection of the village, visit the homes, the sanitary provisions and any other kind of public/private/religious provisions present at the village, relations with the key-persons, etc…
Sample Questions:
What do people feel to be their major problems, concerns, and needs-not only those related to health, but in general?
What are the most important things that affect your people's health and well-being, now and in the future?
Are people interested in finding ways of making self-care safer, more effective and more complete?
How many people live in the community?
How many babies were born this year? How many babies each woman?
How many people died? Of what? At what ages?
Is the population (number of people) getting larger or smaller?
How many can read and write?
What water sources are available to the community?
Which local water sources do people commonly use?
What are the water sources used for?
Is the water sources protected or/and treated?
Is the water always available?
Are there special places for bathing and laundry? Are the same bodies of water used for washing, laundering and receiving human and animal wastes?
Do household have some form of sanitation?
How many families have latrines? How many use them properly?
Are there stagnant or standing bodies of water in the community?
Is there a system of drainage in homes and for the community?
Is there a market in the community? Is the market dirty? Is meat sold in the market?
What kind of materials are used for house construction?
Are the houses kept clean?
Do houses in the community have many windows?
Is cooking done on the floor or where? What cooking fuel is used in the community?
Are mosquitoes, flies and other insect common in the community/houses?
Are the rats and other vermin common?
What do people do to control them?
What animals (dogs, chickens, goats, ecc...), if any, are allowed in the house? What problems do they cause?
Where do families get their water? Is it safe to drink?
Is food protected?
On what do people sleep?
What role do local midwives and healers play in health care?
What traditional ways of healing and medicines are used?
What health services are nearby? What do they cost? How much are they used?
How many children have been vaccinated?
